Rather than having pilots, the ships were a type of Cylon that had a low level of sentience, which the show's creator Ron D. Moore compared to a horse. The menacing design was created by concept artist Eric Chu, who gave it echoes of the design for the Cylon Centurion. The Cylon Raider, also known as the Sparrow,
